with the parts that relats to them. She discussed
this with others and then with the MD. They had
a meeting and unanimously agreed that they needed
a system that is easy
to use and provide instant,
up to date and consistent information to any department
that needs it. “If customer services creates
or changes a client record, this action should
only take place once in the entire system for
everyone to see” said Jane “.. and
for example, if a job is ready for invoicing,
it should automatically be flagged in my system”.
“Ok! I see your point but my problem is
the development cost”
said the MD. Simon, who had read this very article,
said “hang on a minute, I may have the answer!”.
He then went to his office and fetched a copy
of this article and recited this little story
for all present in the meeting. Michael, the MD
that is, said “lets give them a call!..
we are not commiting ourselves to anything, are
we?”. “Nothing at all” said
Simon. So they called us for a meeting and a demo.
In the meeting, they were surprised that although
we are in IT, we spoke plain
English. No Jargon, no buzz words and defintely
no a.c.r.o.n.y.m.s.
The demo was a hit with everyone as it addressed
each departments' wish list. At the end of the
discussions we all agreed that information
can lead to chaos if it is not managed
correctly. “It’s all very impressive,
where do we go from here?..oh and the cost?”
